Bay Haven Beautification Day -- Come Out, Volunteer, Make New Friends, Make A Difference!

The USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is proud to partner with Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, a public elementary school in Sarasota County, to green their campus.

    And we need your help!

Bay Haven will be undergoing a phased renovation over the next couple of years, including the creation of new green spaces on campus with an enlarged central courtyard. Team leaders envision transforming the campus green areas into edible landscapes. The program aligns with our Chapter's Vision "to hand the next generation a healthy, self-sustaining Florida."

The intent is to use Permaculture principles and edible plants to transform the landscape and create a self sustaining, abundant source of healthy foods for Bay Haven students. The food forest will also serve as an educational environment for students to learn firsthand about growing food, as well as many other school subjects.

The first opportunity for you to participate in this transformation is to volunteer at Bay Haven's Beautification Day event on Saturday, April 26, from 9am to noon.

We will be planting an area of approximately 5,000 square feet with a cover crop that is intended to organically fix nitrogen and other nutrients into the the soil, while creating mulch to prepare the area for future plantings.

    • Who Should Attend:
Anyone interested in helping with the effort!
    • What To Bring:
Your gardening tools. We particularly will be needing rakes, shovels and a walk-behind tiller ... and any other tools you believe may be useful. In addition to installing the cover crop, we will also be doing some basic maintenance on the existing landscape.
    • More Information:
If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact Roger Landry, CxA, LEED AP BD+C or Malory Foster, RDN, LDN. We are also seeking individuals interested in helping create a film to document and share the project and, of course, sponsorship.
    • RSVP:
Preferred, but not required.  Y'all come!

We look forward to seeing you at Bay Haven on the 26th to help with this important, innovative project!

Urban Green Council presents the EBie Awards

The USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is proud to be amongst a large group of USGBC Chapters across the USA supporting Urban Green Council's prestigious EBie Awards.

Now in its third year, the EBie Awards are a nationwide juried competition for individuals working in Existing Buildings who have made great strides in improving environmental performance, but whose accomplishments may otherwise go unheralded.

Who are these unsung heroes? The EBies recognize improved environmental performance in existing buildings amongst building operators, facilities managers, owners, engineers, retro-commissioning agents and other professionals who conceived and implemented the work. Focus areas include energy, water, operations, materials use, lighting and tenant engagement.

Bay Haven Beautification and Green Apple Day of Service -- Come Out, Volunteer, Make New Friends, Make A Difference!

The USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is proud to partner with Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, a public elementary school in Sarasota County, to as one of our Chapter's Green Apple Day of Service projects.

    And we need your help!

Bay Haven is undergoing a phased renovation over the next couple of years, including the creation of new green spaces on campus with an enlarged central courtyard.

You can participate in this transformation by volunteering at Bay Haven's Beautification Day event on Saturday, September 27, from 9am to noon.

Y'all come!

We look forward to seeing you at Bay Haven on the 27th to help with this important, innovative project!

Location, Transportation &
Sustainable Sites
LEED v4 Rating System Review
GBCI Approved for 1.5 CEs

Learn and Grow Your Green Building Education this month by joining the Southwest Florida Branch's live broadcast of Location, Transportation and Sustainable Sites. This course has been GBCI Approved (90010707) for 1.5 LEED Specific CEs. The Chapter will report hours to GBCI and AIA on behalf of attendees. Attendees will also receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Attendees will explore two credit categories: 1) Location and Transportation, which focuses on the actual transportation patterns of building occupants and takes a single, performance-based approach to evaluating a building's transportation characteristics; and 2) the Sustainable Sites credits which focus on the environment surrounding the building and the vital relationships between buildings, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.

    Knowledge to be gained includes:

    • Recognize how the transportation survey can determine and improve performance.
    • Identify how the sustainable sites credits support a holistic integration of the site with ecosystems.
    • Recognize synergies between multiple credits.

    Value-added includes:

    • Outstanding GREENworking with industry peers!
    • Post-viewing discussion period with fellow attendees.
    • No-worry registration of your GBCI and AIA CEs.

Each workshop session will be three hours. Attendees should have a basic grasp of the LEED Rating Systems and sustainable-building concepts, and ideally have begun studying for the exam. This two-part workshop will be a dynamic, interactive training course that provides guidance tied to the specifics of each LEED category. Whether seeking a better understanding of LEED or pursuing the LEED GA credential, this class will help you.

    • Two three-hour sessions of intense classroom training in an open, interactive Q&A environment.
    • Advance email of what to study, where to get it, study-time recommendations, "approved" brain-dump from previous exam takers, and a study methodology.
    • Advance receipt of pdf of the material to be covered in the class, which will also be distributed in hardcopy format at the class.
    • Advance receipt of more than 150 practice-exam questions.
    • Refreshments during the class.

    Seating is limited.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

    • Identify the key components of the LEED Rating System.
    • Discuss overall LEED Certification process.
    • Describe the intents and associated concepts of each LEED credit category.
    • Recognize successful LEED strategies and measurements for achieving credit category goals.

INSTRUCTOR -- Christopher Davis, LEED AP BD+C, CSI, CCCA

Christoper Davis empowers people to become catalysts for positive change through education, credentialing and inspiration. A Senior Healthcare Designer with Gresham, Smith and Partners out of Tampa, Christopher has helped countless students grasp the principles of LEED and successfully prepare for both the LEED GA and AP exams.

    CANCELLATION POLICY

In the event a minimum attendance is not reached as determined solely by the USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, the Chapter reserves the right to cancel these workshops up 48 hours in advance.
